Diagnoses and Conditions we struggle with!

*ADHD- ADHD

.... is a problem with inattentiveness, over-activity, impulsivity, or a combination. For these problems to be diagnosed as ADHD, they must be out of the normal range for a child's age and development.
.....Although currently Kyle is more ADD than Adhd these days, he struggles to focus and still, at the end of 9th grade, needs much re-direction!

*ANXIETY-

...A state of apprehension and fear resulting from the anticipation of a threatening event or situation. In psychiatry, a patient has an anxiety disorder if normal psychological functioning is disrupted or if anxiety persists without an identifiable cause.
......Kyle Struggles with fear of many things and has for many years. He struggles daily with being able to "let bygones be bygones." For instance when he was learning to ride a bike without training wheels he would fall off and wouldn't try again no matter what for 6 mo or more. He was 9 before he was able to ride a 2 wheeler. He is that way with anything and everything! If he encounters a bee outside one day he is scared stiff to go outside again...ever! He also suffers from panic attacks!
.
*TOURETTES-

...Tourette syndrome is a condition that causes people to make repeated, quick movements or sounds that they cannot control. These movements or sounds are called tics.
......Kyle's tics are not bad and are controlled mostly now using Chlonadine. His tic...contrary to popular belief of many...DO NOT include cussing!!! Eyes opening wide, blinking, sniffing, clearing the throat and a noise that sounds like he is scratching his throat are his basic tics!

*ASPERGERS -

...Asperger syndrome is often considered a high functioning form of autism. It can lead to difficulty interacting socially, repeat behaviors, and clumsiness.
......While Kyle has VERY mild symptoms of Aspergers, he struggles mostly only with interactions with other children and acting his age around others!

*DYSLEXIA-

...A general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols.
......When Kyle was in grades K-3 he wrote almost every number and letter backwards. In 5th and 6th only a few and now mainly only J and 3 are written backwards as he has gotten older and learned the right way.
He reads fine and at grade level now but he use to read above grade level. He does see things backwards sometimes...like if its 3:31 he may say and think its 3:13...etc. He has many symptoms of Dyslexia however most do NOT include reading. If anyone tells you dyslexia is a reading disorder alone they are not accurate!

*DYSCALCULA-

...impaired ability to learn grade-appropriate mathematics
......Kyle really struggles with basic math, trying to do 9th grade math is almost impossible!

*HIGH Blood Pressure

*DYSGRAPHIA-

... having severe problems with the written word, which is affected by extreme difficulty with fine-motor skills - in spite of having normal intelligence and ability’.
checklist on dysgraphia....

Written text very poor considering language development.
Poor motor control.
Writing that is almost impossible to read.
Mixture of printing and cursive writing on the same line.
Writes in all directions, i.e. right slant then left slant.
Big and small spaces between words.
Different sized letters on the same line.
Mixes up capital letters and lower case letters on the same line.
Abnormal and irregular formation of letters.
Very slow writing.
Very slow copying from board.
Does not follow margins.
Grips the pen too tight and with a ‘fist grip’.
Holds pen very low down so fingers almost touches the paper.
Watches hand intently whilst actually writing.
Poor spelling.
Bizarre spelling.
Problems with spelling wrong words i.e., ‘brot’ for brought and ‘stayshun’ for station.
Problems with spelling words such as i.e. drink as ‘brink’.

......Kyle struggles with writing, and hand strength. He also struggles with any utensils like forks, spoons and anything hand held.

*DYSPRAXIA-

...By 3 years old
Symptoms are evident from an early age. Babies may exhibit significant feeding problems.
They are slow to achieve expected developmental milestones. For example, by the age of eight months they still may not sit independently.
Many children with dyspraxia fail to go through the crawling stages, preferring to ‘bottom shuffle’ and then walk. They usually avoid tasks which require good manual dexterity.
Pre-school children – 3 to 5 year olds
If dyspraxia is not identified, problems can persist and affect the childís life at school. Increasing frustration and lowering of self-esteem can result.
Children with dyspraxia may demonstrate some of these types of behaviour:
Very high levels of motor activity, including feet swinging and tapping when seated, hand-clapping or twisting. Unable to stay still
High levels of excitability, with a loud/shrill voice
May be easily distressed and prone to temper tantrums
May constantly bump into objects and fall over
Hands flap when running
Difficulty with pedalling a tricycle or similar toy
Lack of any sense of danger (jumping from heights etc)
Continued messy eating. May prefer to eat with their fingers, frequently spill drinks
Avoidance of constructional toys, such as jigsaws or building blocks
Poor fine motor skills. Difficulty in holding a pencil or using scissors. Drawings may appear immature
Lack of imaginative play. May show little interest in ëdressing upí or in playing appropriately in a home corner or wendy house
Limited creative play
Isolation within the peer group. Rejected by peers, children may prefer adult company
Laterality (left- or right-handedness) still not established
Persistent language difficulties
Sensitive to sensory stimulation, including high levels of noise, tactile defensiveness, wearing new clothes
Limited response to verbal instruction. May be slow to respond and have problems with comprehension
Limited concentration. Tasks are often left unfinished
By 7 years old
Problems may include:
Difficulties in adapting to a structured school routine
Difficulties in Physical Education lessons
Unable to tie shoe laces
Barely legible handwriting
Immature drawing and copying skills
Limited concentration and poor listening skills
Literal use of language
Inability to remember more than one instruction at a time
Slow completion of class work
Continued high levels of motor activity
Hand flapping or clapping when excited
Tendency to become easily distressed and emotional
Problems with co-ordinating a knife and fork
Inability to form relationships with other children
Sleeping difficulties, including wakefulness at night and nightmares
Reporting of physical symptoms, such as migraine, headaches, feeling sick
By 8 to 9 years old
Children with dyspraxia may have become disaffected with the education system.Handwriting is often a particular difficulty. By the time they reach secondary education their attendance record is often poor.
*LEARNING DISABILITIES (LD)-
A condition giving rise to difficulties in acquiring knowledge and skills to the normal level expected of those of the same age.

.....Kyle struggles with remembering things he learns, mostly short term.

*EHLERS DANLOS SYNDROME (EDS)-

...is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders.
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a group of inherited disorders that affect your connective tissues — primarily your skin, joints and blood vessel walls. Connective tissue is a complex mixture of proteins and other substances that provides strength and elasticity to the underlying structures in your body.

People who have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome usually have overly flexible joints and stretchy, fragile skin. This can become a problem if you have a wound that requires stitches, because the skin often isn't strong enough to hold them.

A more severe form of the disorder, called vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, can cause the walls of your blood vessels, intestines or uterus to rupture. If you have vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, you may want to talk to a genetic counselor before starting a family.

I am still trying to learn more than this. Kyle has super long fingers and toes, loose joint, very hyper-flexible and has constant knee issues. He can also pop his shoulder out of place on purpose! Really gross! He has had eye exams and Echo- cardiograms and so far he has no life threatening issues with this diagnosis. He subluxes his hips, knees and shoulders often. Also breaks blood vessels easily and gets petichae too.

*GASTROPARISIS-

... is a condition that reduces the ability of the stomach to empty its contents. It does not involve a blockage (obstruction).

Many people with EDS also suffer from this. Kyle is currently takes Prilosec for refux issues and Erythromycin for help emptying his stomach.

* COSTOCHONDRITIS-

...is an inflammation of a rib or the cartilage connecting a rib. It is a common cause of chest pain. Also...

*Precordial Catch Syndrome-

...Its symptoms begin with a sudden onset of anterior chest pain on the left side of the chest. The pain is localized and does not radiate like heart attack pain typically does. Breathing in, and sometimes breathing out, often intensifies the pain. Typically this causes the patient to freeze in place and breathe shallowly until the episode passes.

*PDE11A- (2013) Learned through Genetic testing-

This effects the Adrenal glands and can cause cushings disease! No issues with this thus far

*16p 13.11 microdeletion- (Not dx till 01-2016 through additional genetic testing)

..EXPLAINS IT ALL (Brian, Will, Kyle and Emery all have and all dx between 12-2015 and Jan 2016)

Children may need support with learning. supportive services fro special needs
Feeding difficulties (Sucking)
Wet the bed till 10 yrs old
Fine motor skill issues-Using pencils, forks (utinsils) very hard. (dysgraphia dx)
low muscle tone
hypermobility and stretchy skin, very long fingers and toes (EDS DX)
Constipation and GI issues
Frustration issues (anger, not as bad as dad and bro yet), not evident as a child
Aspergers dx
Sensory Integretion, adhd, anxiety and tourettes dx
Learning difficulties
