Where Do I Start?

Many people try to mimic the public school system. They want to do 8 hours of school and work their kids to death. One good reason to homeschool is so that your kids actually have a life outside of school. This is the reason the name of our homeschool is" Living Life Academy". Before homeschooling my son was gone from 7am till 4:30pm, then had 2 hours of homework. No child should have to endure this.....EVER!

#1- Find out what kind of learner your child is first foremost!

.Auditory Learners: Hear Auditory learners would rather listen to things being explained than read about them. Reciting information out loud and having music in the background may be a common study method. Other noises may become a distraction resulting in a need for a relatively quiet place

Visual Learners: See Visual learners learn best by looking at graphics, watching a demonstration, or reading. For them, it’s easy to look at charts and graphs, but they may have difficulty focusing while listening to an explanation.

Kinesthetic Learners: Touch Kinesthetic learners process information best through a “hands-on” experience. Actually doing an activity can be the easiest way for them to learn. Sitting still while studying may be difficult, but writing things down makes it easier to understand.

Types of Learning Styles: What Everybody Should Know Although most people use a combination of the three learning styles, they usually have a clear preference for one. Knowing and understanding the types of learning styles is important for students of any age. It is advantageous for students to understand their type of learning style early on so that homework and learning may become easier and less stressful in the future. Although it may be tempting to stick with what works, it’s important to practice and train the other types of learning styles early on so that, as he grows, the child can utilize the other types just as effectively. - See more at: http://www.learningrx.com/types-of-learning-styles-faq.htm#sthash.1T6AUj0n.dpuf

#2-Do not try to emulate the public school system. There is a reason we homeschool and that reason is that the public school system DOES NOT WORK!

#3- Understand how much your child can handle and also your childs needs. My son has Dysgraphia and EDS, so writing hurts his hands and is sloppy. I allowed him to create Power Points of his work and what he learned, he loves the computer so he loved that. Also this year he will speak into a speak to text program his work and print it out.

Do what you need to do to individualize your children so they do not have to conform to a mold of what the state you live in says they should do or be doing.

My 15 yr old is graduating this school year. In brick and mortor public school he was making straight D's and F's. We did K12 for 2 yrs in a row, 7th and 8th...he was on the straight A Honor Roll! It's still the public school but he had more one on one. But, problem was he finished ALL of the years work by December, BOTH years and wasn't allowed to advance. So we began traditional homeschooling where he has finished 2 yrs in one year since 8th. Well, my son also has dyscalcula, dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyspraxia. We 1st figured out what his learning style was and we found things online to help him, even when he was in k12. Video style learning, khan academy, hippo campus, YouTube....he gets it, he totally gets it now. All of this to say...GOOGLE learning styles, see what your child's is, find something online to help. Expensive curriculum's are not needed.
